Are you looking to rent an apartment in Farmington Hills Michigan? If this is your first time to rent an apartment, there are lots of things that you have to keep in mind.  Surely, you already have the details of the apartment you want in mind. The number of bedrooms, the location and the monthly rental fee are all accounted for.  But how about the other important details like safety, security, maintenance and amenities? Do you already know how to check those?

Below is a quick and simple checklist of what to look for when renting an apartment. Always keep them in mind whenever you are out looking for an apartment that you can call your new home.

For Security and Safety

Inspect the detectors (smoke and carbon-monoxide) and sprinklers in the apartment. Check if they are still in good working condition. Ask the last time they are tested and inspected. Make sure that there are fire extinguisher or fire blanket that is easy to use and access in case needed.

Check out the door locks. How secure are they? What kind of materials are used? Are they burglar-proof?

Check out the windows. Test their locks and see how secure they are. Go outside and check if the windows are installed on a safe distance/location. Make sure the windows can’t be used as an easy access point in and out your apartment especially if you are on a lower floor.

Features and Amenities

Test all the light switches and fixtures. Inspect them all and if there’s something that needs repair, tell that to the landlord as soon as possible for safety reasons.

Check the water pressure. Test all the faucets inside the apartment. Try the shower head and see how the water flows. Flush down the toilet to see if there’s any kind of trouble.

Inspect the floor closely. Check the carpet thoroughly and look for possible damage that needs repair. If the carpet needs more cleaning, tell it to the landlord before you move in.

Inspect the walls and look out for water stains or watermarks as this is a sign of leaks inside the wall.

Inspect all the appliances included in the apartment unit. Check the refrigerator, stove, oven or microwave if they are still in good working condition.

Ask about the laundry facilities. Do they have it on-site? Know how to acces it and what is their method of payment for it?

Know how to process a maintenance request. If there’s something that needs immediate attention, ask their process when it comes to emergency situation.

Ask about the parking rules and regulation.

Ask about their pet policy.

Know the process of garbage disposal and removal.

Ask other things that you have in mind that needs further clarification. Don’t hold it back, ask the landlord everything before you move in at your newly found apartment.

With this simple checklist, finding a suitable apartment for rent in Farmington Hills that suits your taste and preference will be stress and hassle-free.
