Pet-Proofing Your Apartment

We live in a pet-loving culture. Our pets are cute, funny and are part of the family. And just like all other family members, sometimes they can drive us crazy.

When living in pet friendly apartments, keeping your place clean and damage free becomes essential. According to the household insurance firm Safeware, 17% of all furniture claims are the result of pet damage. That being said, your furniture is not the only thing that is at risk. Carpets, floors and even walls can easily be damaged by our furry friends. By taking these simple steps to prevent pet damage to your apartment, you will mutually benefit their safety while helping protect your belongings, along with your pocketbook.

  • Discourage destructive chewing. You can purchase deterrent sprays from most pet suppliers or you can even make your own using citrus oil or vinegar. We have also heard rubbing clove oil on items that you are trying to protect can work. In exchange for gnawing on your personal belongings, it is important to provide your pet with a substitute, especially since chewing is a natural behavior for most dogs.
  • Prevent access to certain rooms while unattended (or attended) with gates.
  • Make sure your drawers and cabinet doors are closed and properly store electrical cords, cleaning solutions, medicine and batteries.
  • Ensure your garbage bin is out of reach and sealed properly. This goes for your clothing hamper as well.
  • If you have cats, you should have at least one litter box per cat and it is important to scoop it daily. Cats prefer to use a clean litter box
  • For dogs, trim their nails. This can be done on your own or by a professional groomer. If you do choose to do it on your own – here is a link on how to safely clip their paws.
  • Provide scratching posts for cats. Cats love to scratch, and scratching posts provide a more appealing option than your door frame or furniture
  • Clean up cat or dog urine as quickly as possible. The odor is not just unpleasant, but leaving it can confuse your pet into thinking that it is “okay” to continue to urinate in that same place, or other spots inside your apartment. Also, the longer the urine sits, the harder it is to clean, which makes removing the odor even more difficult. The best way to get the smell out of carpet or furniture is with an enzymatic cleaner, which can be purchased at most local pet stores.

Being that Brookfield Management offers pet friendly apartments, at both Botsford Place Terrace Apartments and Cass Lake Front Apartments, we understand that pets are not just animals, they are part of the family. They don’t mean to defecate on the carpet or scratch the couch, but repairing pet damage can be costly. We strongly encourage all of our pet owners to mitigate the damage by training your furry friends and providing them with the stimulation they need to be happy and healthy while residing in our pet friendly apartments.
